Laser Vision Correction Surgical correction of vision problems has been available since the 1970’s. Recent advancements in technology have allowed more patients than ever before to enjoy the benefits of refractive surgery.
Refractive surgery involves reshaping the front surface of the eye called the cornea. This allows the cornea to focus light rays through the eye onto the retina to produce clear vision. Current vision problems correctable with laser vision correction include nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism.
There are several refractive surgery procedures available. Laser Vision Correction has allowed millions of people to become less dependent on glasses and contact lenses. Many have stopped wearing corrective lenses altogether. If you are considering refractive surgery, important questions to ask your eye doctor prior to choosing a surgeon includes:
Is the surgeon a board certified Ophthalmologist or a cornea specialist? This is important as it means the surgeon has undergone special training and testing by their peers to demonstrate their knowledge and skill.
What kind of laser do they use? The surgeon should be using an FDA approved Laser.
Does the laser have a tracking system? The latest lasers are able to follow eye movements during the procedure. This enables the surgeon to more accurately position the laser and to safeguard against movements made by the patient during the surgery. This leads to better results.
How many cases have they performed? Surgeons who have performed more than 1,000 cases have better outcomes due to more experience.
Is there a charge for a touch up or enhancement? Some patients require a second procedure to achieve the desired vision correction. The surgeon should not charge a fee within the first year.
What kind of follow-up care is provided with your surgery? A follow up visit is needed one day after the procedure, one week, one month, three months, and one year. Some surgeons include the follow-up care in the price of the surgery while others charge extra.
Does the surgeon use the newest lasers and wave front technology? The newest lasers can treat larger areas of the cornea and reduce side effects such as glare and halos. The new wave front technology allows the surgeon to correct higher order optical aberrations and has the potential to correct vision to better than 20/20.
Can the surgeon perform other types of vision corrective surgery? LASIK is one of several types of vision corrective surgery. The surgeon should be able to perform the procedure that is best for your eyes.
Does the surgeon put the price ahead of experience and quality? Quality should be the most important consideration in choosing your surgeon.
